Is Investing in SEO Worth It for a Moving Company Compared to Buying Leads?

Matt Olderman

You've probably run this math more than once. Another shared lead lands in your inbox, three other movers got the same one at the same time, and whoever calls back first wins the job. You book maybe one in five. The rest is just money you handed a broker for a chance.

Fair question, then. Is SEO for moving companies worth it, or is buying leads just faster and easier? We get asked this constantly, usually by an owner who's already sunk a few thousand dollars into leads that went nowhere.

Here's the honest read on both.

The Problem With Buying Leads

Shared leads aren't fake. Someone really did request that quote. The problem is you're not the only one who paid for the name and number. Most brokers sell the same lead to three, four, sometimes five movers at once.

You're not buying a customer: you're buying a race.

Every renewal cycle, you pay full price again. There's no equity building up. Stop paying, and the leads stop showing up. Same as they did on day one.Run the actual numbers on what direct SEO leads cost compared to shared leads over a full year, and the gap only gets wider the longer you wait.

What SEO Actually Buys You Instead

SEO works differently because you're not renting attention, you're building it. When your site ranks for "movers near me" or your city-plus-service terms, that visibility is yours. Competitors can't buy their way in front of your rankings the way they can outbid you for the same shared lead.

The customer who finds you organically already searched, compared, and chose your listing. Nobody split that call three ways. Your phone actually rings, and it's yours when it does.

Running the Numbers

We've run this exact comparison for movers before. For Big League Movers, we rebuilt their paid search account around real customer intent instead of generic keyword bidding. Cost per lead dropped 18.39% year over year and clicks rose 26%. That's paid traffic, where you're still bidding against competitors every time someone searches.

Organic SEO doesn't carry that per-click price tag at all. You pay for the work once, it compounds, and the cost per lead trends toward zero the longer it ranks. That's the opposite direction shared leads and ad auctions move, and it's exactly why knowing your actual break-even point matters more than comparing sticker prices.

The same local playbook has produced numbers like this elsewhere. Hawaiian Island Pools went from an average keyword rank of 11.58 to 1.98 in eight months, with 89% of tracked terms landing in the top three. Different trade. Same math. Rank for the thing people are already typing, and you stop paying a toll to compete for it.

The Part We Won't Sugarcoat

SEO isn't instant, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Most local SEO work takes 30 to 60 days to show traction and closer to 90 for real movement, longer in brutally competitive metros. Full payback, the point where your organic cost per job actually drops below what you're paying for a shared lead, is usually a longer runway than that, and worth knowing upfront. If a shared lead is a payday loan, SEO is a retirement account. It's slower to start and a lot better once it's built.

That's not a knock on paying for leads entirely. If you need one job booked this week to make payroll, a shared lead might get you there faster, even at a loss. But that's a short-term patch, not a growth plan.

So Which One Is Worth It?

Need to survive the next two weeks? Buying leads can plug the gap. Want to own your market in two years? SEO is the only channel where cost per lead drops instead of climbing every time you renew.

Most movers who've been burned by brokers already know which one they'd rather bet on. We built HQDM because we got tired of watching businesses get fleeced chasing the same rented traffic everyone else was buying.

Want to see what that looks like in a moving company's numbers? Look at the case studies, then book a call. We'll walk you through the numbers ourselves: no retainer, no obligation.
