What Service Areas Should a Moving Company Set on Its Google Business Profile?
You added every town within 100 miles. Then your profile slid out of the map pack, or worse, Google suspended it. We see this a lot with movers who treat the service area box like a place to plant flags.
Here's the short answer. List the cities and ZIP codes your crews reach in a normal week, up to 20, all within about two hours of driving from your base. Your SEO for moving companies plan handles the rest of your territory through city pages and ads, not through the profile.
What Google Lets You Set
Google's help documentation sets four limits. You get up to 20 service areas, and they can be cities, postal codes, or other named areas, but not countries or states (Google added that ban in June 2025). Your whole territory shouldn't stretch past roughly two hours of driving from where you operate. Edits take up to 48 hours to appear.
Two more rules trip up movers. Hide your address if you don't staff a storefront, and keep to one profile per metro area, because Google can suspend an account that runs duplicates for the same business.
Service areas are one field in a much bigger form. If you haven't built out the rest, read our guide to setting up your whole profile first, and come back after.
How to Pick Your 20 Areas
Pull your booked jobs from the last 12 months and sort them by pickup city. That's your list. Not the towns you wish you served, and not the ones a competitor claims.
Start with your home city, then add the neighboring cities where you book the most moves, and stop when the jobs thin out. A town that sends you three moves a year doesn't earn a spot.
Check coverage before you spend a slot. A ZIP code inside a city you already listed doesn't need its own entry. Save separate ZIP entries for big cities where neighborhoods act like different markets.
Your site has to back the list up. If you list five cities, give each one a page with real detail on how you move people there. A profile that claims a city your website never mentions gives Google a reason to doubt you. On the BryteCall local SEO results, we rebuilt thin service pages and laid the groundwork for Miami location pages. Their map coverage grew to nearly 100% top 3 positions across the metro.
Long-distance movers hit a wall here. You can't list Texas or an entire interstate corridor, so build the list around your pickup territory and handle destinations on your website with city-pair pages, where you have room to explain the route, the timeline, and the crew.
The List Won't Outrank Your Address
Most agencies skip this part. Google still leans heavily on proximity to your business location, so a mover 90 minutes out can lose to a competitor parked next door, no matter how many towns you add.
So treat the list as a statement of where you work. It isn't a ranking lever. Category choice usually carries more weight, so look into which primary category fits movers before you obsess over ZIP codes.
What Overreach Costs You
Hawaiian Island Pools ranked in the top 3 for several core terms and still had a service area problem. Their messaging claimed the whole state, but they really worked the Tampa Bay region, which risked confusing both customers and Google. They install pools instead of moving boxes, yet the pattern is the same.
We narrowed the targeting to Tampa Bay and built pages for Tampa, St. Pete, and New Port Richey. Alongside the technical and content fixes, their average rank improved from 11.58 in January to 1.98 in August, and 89% of their tracked keywords now sit in the top 3.
Overstuffing runs the same risk on a smaller scale. When a one-location mover claims 20 cities across two metros, customers stop believing any of it.
Update the list when you open a new location or start booking from a new city, and otherwise leave it alone. Constant edits earn you nothing but another 48-hour wait.
If landing in the three-pack is the real goal, our map pack ranking service covers what drives it beyond this one setting.

Book a call about your service areas, and we'll look at the whole profile while we're at it. If they're costing you jobs, we'll tell you. Fine as they are? You'll hear that too. And you only pay when you grow.
